It isn’t what you say, it’s what you do that will create the life you want. The high school years are a great time for students to build valuable and rewarding action characteristics to increase self-esteem and deliver results. While enjoying these years, students should be developing the right mindset to achieve the success they desire in the future. In order for success to happen, for students to have that lifestyle they often speak of wanting, they must become adults with a solid, results-based work ethic. Wasting these four years can’t be a part of the plan. By using their time in high school to build the right actions for a successful lifestyle, students can ensure themselves a bright future, no matter the obstacles they will encounter. Work Ethic is for the high school student expecting to live life successfully, and is willing to do the right growth actions to shape a lifestyle of fulfillment, fun, and results.

Want Success: Go and Get It!

Whether you believe you can or you can’t, it’s true. If you are expecting life to just hand you your heart’s desires, and not have to fight to attain and keep them, you are sadly mistaken. Life will require you to design the best plan you can, then give all you have to attain your desired success. Believe it or not, there was a time where I thought my college degree would blast open doors for me, and my success desires. Wrong! I also thought things like, “If I could only just get this degree” all things would be gravy. Getting a degree is just part of the picture. There are so many elements to success you won’t learn in a traditional high school setting, but no matter what you learn during those times, you must learn to go and get what you want out of life. I am dead serious about that. It is what I taught as a coach, what I teach my kids, and a rule I live by. No one is going to just give you something because you exist. If they do give you something just because you exist, you better be ready for the giver to get a bunch more in return. There are no free rides. If you want more than the average, then you have to go and get it.

The students that go and get it find a way to achieve, no matter the difficulty of teacher, subject, or situation. Know this: There is no magical force that is going to arrive and take you to your desired success. I don’t care what you believe in, or how much luck you have; you will have to find a way to achieve your goals. One of the most puzzling things about life is the way blind faith can stall our desires. A lack of planning followed by inaction can cause us to stop and wait for something special to happen when we could be working toward that special happening. When you stop, you lose momentum, and therefore time, in accomplishing your goals. I have watched as people have used their blind faith in something to get out of doing the hard work to achieve a goal. Your beliefs and faith should set your body into motion toward a goal or desired accomplishment. No matter what you believe, you can’t get miracles in your life if you aren’t actively pursuing your goal. Why do you think we go to school all those years? Why do you think people read hundreds of books on a subject? Why do you think people dedicate their lives to a cause? They do all these things because they know their action, and being in the right place at the right time, is what makes the miracle. You have to set your mind to do the correct things that will bring the success you desire. There are always going to be difficult people entering your life. Hopefully they don’t stay for long, but you need to learn how to navigate your path while dealing with people making the way difficult. I don’t believe you should bow down and not stand up for yourself, but you have to understand there are going to be more difficulties that arrive as you work to expand who you are as a person.

While developing Firefly Event Photography, I met adversity way before I met a payday. I still meet adversity, but now I am so focused (through fighting the previous adversities) I now understand it is just part of the path. When I feel an adversity may be too much, I look at others who have come before me as proof that living my dream, and creating my business of choice, is possible. You have to find a way to achieve in the time you have each and every day. Don’t let minor or major issues stop you from reaching the goal you feel set to accomplish.

Thinking Greatness for High School Students

Most of your personal setbacks will not be because of someone else, they will be because of you.   There are many tragedies people must face in life, but rarely are they enough to actually hold anyone back in life. Rather, it comes down to your mindset and the thoughts that move through your head.

What would happen to your actions if you changed your negative thoughts to ones that embraced you having the best possible version of your life? What would your life look like if you believed you could be great at something? How hard would you study if you knew you could achieve millionaire status in your desired area of occupation? How would you treat people if you knew the key to guaranteeing a great life? What would you do if you knew all the answers? Unfortunately, no one knows all the answers. No one knows if they will ever achieve great things, but what a difference believing makes. What a difference thinking you can be great makes. I don’t believe people think about greatness enough. I think becoming great at something scares people into not acting on even the simplest desires of the heart. The key to your success will be believing you can achieve what you set out to do. But in order to attain this, you need to start with a thought. You have to think you are going to be great at something. Becoming great at anything makes you an expert while positively influencing others. Our society needs great people because they inspire others; too many bad people and their influence work the same way. Too many lazy people, and you get the same thing: a group of people feeling entitled to be handed everything. Schools now have shifted, and students are becoming lost as to how to achieve greatness in their lives. It all starts with thinking greatness and letting your actions follow.

By thinking greatness, you allow others to enjoy your success and, ultimately, inspire others to greatness. When you listen to people who have achieved success, they always speak of a person who inspired them. This is a great time to pay attention to those that are sharing information of their success. Very few people just arrive at success without being inspired by someone who came before them in the same field. Often, people can be inspired by others outside their field, and use their words of inspiration to continually motivate them toward success. I love watching sports, and some of the people that inspire me are athletes that have become business people after their athletic career was over. I think it is pretty cool they were able to adjust to a different world and achieve success differently. Others that inspire me are entrepreneurs who build businesses from the ground up, sell it off, and do it again. It seems like they have the Midas touch. Their success definitely inspires me to work every day on myself so I can one day achieve my desired success, and become an inspiration to others.

How many people inspire you to push and follow in their footsteps? Who do you enjoy listening to, or see performing to the point where their actions inspire your actions? Those are the people you should strive to be like. If we all followed in the footsteps of good people, the world would take care of itself. People would do the work of greatness, and work to share their positive actions with others.

Wake Up Ready to Succeed

Expectations are crucial when it comes to how your day is going to go. Many people think so poorly of their day before they have even have breakfast. How do you get out of bed in the morning? Are you up and ready to go? Do you tell yourself you aren’t a morning person? Do you need to get up earlier to get motivated? No matter the time you awake, you should always rise knowing you will make a positive mark on the world. Many students wake up with negative thoughts about school and the possibilities of anything great happening. They are almost in shock that something good can come out of a day when they are forced to go to school and learn something they don’t like learning about. These students lack the understanding that the day is full of many types of possibilities, but having the mindset of positivity helps focus on the good that is happening, rather than the bad. If bad does happen, you now have an opportunity to make some good out of it. Most people don’t have tragic days. Tragedy is different, and out of your control. However, a positive attack on the day to accomplish your personal desires is always closer than you think.

By waking up ready to succeed, you have the opportunity to add more fun in your life. You see the world very differently, and are willing to put in the work to make your desires come true. There is nothing magical to it. By waking up ready to succeed, you develop an expectation that the day will move you closer to your goals. You will start to notice that many “smaller” issues stay small, and don’t become bigger, because the way you are dealing with them.

Wake up ready to succeed by taking 30 minutes the night before to prepare. Before you end your day, take a few minutes to think about the next day and its possibilities. I write down all the things I want to accomplish the next day on a small notepad. I wake up knowing that I have a great day planned, and if I accomplish many of the things on the list, then I will be continuing on my successful lifestyle journey. Don’t worry, there are plenty of days where the list is too long and the hours are too short. There are days when I complete the entire list, and there are the days when the list creates more things than I can do. The idea is to limit being busy doing things that don’t matter, and use your best energy to work on the things that do.

Creating a list isn’t about being perfect every day; it is about focusing your actions to create the life you desire. The list is directing your energy toward the things that will deliver the most return. The list can also be looked at, and changed, as you see fit.
