Push Beyond Average for High School Success

When I was a high school social studies teacher, the first day of school was filled with me spouting rules and handing out the class text to each student. Nothing like handing out a packet of rules and a ten-pound book to shake the nerves of sophomores! The bar I set in my class was that the effort needed to make an average grade was a C, or 69.5% to 79.4%. This average bar was very difficult to get over for all students because I believed in challenging my students to become better learners. I believe that if you make an effort to always push beyond average, you will make some great strides within your high school years.

Why push beyond average? Why not? As a teacher, I would always wonder why students weren’t pushing beyond average in some part of their life. There were kids who played video games that I would destroy at their game of choice. I would say, “You mean to tell me this is all you do, and I get on the stick and beat you? At least destroy me so I see how you are spending your time.” Nothing wrong with video games, but if you aren’t at least dominant at it after all that time, why bother? In high school, I really cared about baseball. I would practice all the time just to keep up with the other players on the team. It was tough because I always had to hold my own by practicing on my own for hours. There was dedication for pushing beyond average. Even if you were better than me at one area, I would still find a way to win. I didn’t have a name for it; I just worked my butt off to not be even close to the weakest link.

Where are you pushing beyond average? You can’t be the class clown and have mediocre jokes all the time. You can’t be the A+ student and have a report card full of C’s. There has to be something you push yourself beyond being average at. Can you claim to be the best at anything in your neighborhood? Once you can, you need to do like we did as kids. Go a neighborhood over and test your skills to see if you are really as good as you think.

Pushing beyond average has to be connected to your personal pride and self-esteem. Everyone should know you are dominant in something. If not dominant, then you are above average and would be considered the go-to person. One of the best things I would see as a teacher was when a student decided to do better in class. They usually made the big decision to move their seat to a better place in the classroom. They had to make that walk of shame to the area of the room where the smart kids were doing their thing. They had to abandon their old friends and go to be near the other kids they deemed “not worthy” a few weeks ago. The best part of this would be the respect the group of “smart” kids would suddenly have in the lives of those performing below average.

In order to push beyond average, you need to know that average means the activity or class you are involved in. If there are teachers tougher than others, it may require you to deliver more effort just to earn an average grade than in another situation. In order to know this, it is best to ask what the expectations are, and see how that matches up to what you are able to deliver. If you have minimal skills, you will need to improve your skills in order to master the class or activity. By knowing what you are up against, you can also make the right decisions if you need more of a challenge. I believe it is good for high school students to have teachers who are very challenging on every level. Why should the honors and advanced placement students be the only ones challenged? Regular curriculum classes need to be very challenging also, so if you have to take a class at this level, look for a teacher who will challenge you. Being challenged will help you be more successful in the long run.

Two Minutes To Educational Success

What is the real reason many people become successful so fast? I think it has to do with the small actions they take in life that have the biggest impact. I call this the Two Minute Zone. Every day, we have an opportunity to get things done. Those things are big or small, important or insignificant. The problem is the choices we make when it comes to the small but important ones. Take, for instance, the choice to fold your clothes, pick up your mess, or make your bed daily. Aside from having a large amount to clean up, most of these tasks can be maintained within a two-minute window. This is where procrastination kills desire and hope. Procrastination isn’t a killer of big dreams; if it were, we would definitely know it was coming, and avoid it. Procrastination is the killer of little steps that get you to your big dream. How hard is it to put one shirt away? It takes less than two minutes to fold and put in its correct location. However, if we avoid these little steps, it takes hours on the weekend to clean because we didn’t take two extra minutes when it was manageable.

Become more organized by taking two minutes to get rid of extra things on your desk, or area of study. In my early years of teaching, my desk was always a mess, but I stand on my record of never losing a student’s assignment. As I started to read about the importance of simple organization, I realized taking two minutes each class period to organize saved me an hour later in the day when all the class assignments were turned in. Teachers will use trays or folders to organize the assignments coming in, and this method didn’t work for me. I used a paper clip system to organize assignments so I could grade them in a timely fashion. It was such a simple system that employed me to stay organized. There are times when a simple system is all we need, but we avoid that by just letting things stack up, and believing we will have time to do it later. If you are a busy student, your time to redo things is very limited, and you should have a system in place that helps you organize and increase your success.

If your area of study is organized, you will be able to dive right into your assignments when you are ready, and won’t have to move things out of the way to be productive. Taking the time to clear a space is wasting your productivity time. I like to use my bad energy to clean up things. There’s no sense in using my good, creative energy to clean off my desk and then get to work. My best work must be used by my best energy. When I sit and write, I always prepare for the next day after my writing energy is depleted so I don’t have to start my writing session by cleaning and moving things around.

Work Smarter For Success In Education

There is a saying you probably have heard by now, “Work smarter, not harder.” However, how do you work smarter if you don’t know how “dumb” you are working? Sure, people can tell you ways to improve your processes so you are more productive, but is that what’s best for you? The issue with the work smarter campaign is it assumes you are working dumb. This can be a burden to people just starting out on their journey, such as high school kids. You have to know the work smarter thought is missing an additional ingredient, which I state as, “Work as smart and efficient as you can, until you learn and implement a better strategy.” This is what the statement should really sound like, but people prefer short and quick quips and memes to post on the internet. When you read a thought like this, I hope you are taking the time to understand the meaning of such a statement. Working smarter is a generic way to say, “Learn to be more efficient with your efforts.” By learning to use your energy properly, you will get great results in a shorter amount of time. As you continue to use your energy the best way possible, you will see your ability to accomplish more is directly connected to your systems and processes.

Work smarter by embracing failure as part of the journey. It is impossible to work smarter without some form of failure, so get over the fact that you will fail. Learning a new subject or sport is a daunting task for anyone. Failure is a must for anyone looking for success. What the working smarter model embraces is analyzing your efforts and making the best changes for better results. As you are learning new languages, you are going to say the words incorrectly, but having a teacher help you say them correctly after your failure brings you closer to success. If you are working to learn a language in high school, and desire to be fluent, you must employ online programs, tutors, or cultural connections to gain the results you desire. As you begin the process of correcting your failures immediately, you will see gains in speaking ability in a shorter amount of time.

This is true of anything you want to learn. Long gone are the days of just doing something in class, and that being enough effort to be successful. In today’s world, you have to almost submerge yourself into the new process you desire to learn, due to the availability of so many additional resources. Say goodbye to the days of just sprinting in practice to get faster; now, you have to put in time outside of practice. If you want that time to be well spent, you have to evaluate your ability and make the right changes. When a coach or mentor isn’t around to show you the way, there are always a good number of videos on the subject on YouTube. Many instructional videos on this site can help the learner at any time of the day. Thanks to the internet, learning and accomplishing is now a 24 hour possibility. When you fail, your new help is on the internet, ready, with a video, to share how you can turn those failures in to successes as quickly as possible. By embracing failure, and making the necessary changes to improve, you will not fear failure, but invite the opportunity more often, knowing you have a process to deal with it and improve your actions toward your desired success.
