High School Success Tips: Risk It All

There is a saying in poker when a player puts all of their chips on the line for what they believe is their best chance of success. The term “All In” is the one time in poker when you know it is a make or break situation. Laying all of your money on the line in this sink or swim situation can put a person out of the game, or double their cash. Poker may be gambling, but these guys are going “all in” with everything they have to capture a victory. This is the time when the poker player has calculated all of his moves, and realizes that without laying it all on the line, there will be no chance of victory, only guaranteed defeat. I often wonder why I waited so long to act on my desires. I also wonder why some days it takes me a few minutes to get cranked up to really go to work on my desires. I attribute most of it to being a human being who isn’t perfect, but a continual work in progress.

The bottom line is that if you really want something in this world, you are going to have to risk a lot. When I talk with students who want something in life, I always ask what they are willing to give in order to get it. Most of the answers involve things they are willing to part with. They say I will do this in my spare time, or work on that in between some favorite activity; they don’t quite understand that achieving something big in life requires you to risk major things. It may mean you have to give up more than just sleep and a daily hobby. There may be a cost involved where you have to earn the cash via a part-time job just to start your journey. I believe the reason people don’t achieve in life isn’t because they don’t want to, it is mainly because they won’t give up the things they like for the opportunity they will love. Life may ask you to move to a different place to achieve your goal, because where you currently live can’t educate you well enough. That is easy if the college is where a lot of your friends are going, but what about one that is over 800 miles away? That is a huge risk at 18 years of age, but what do you want to achieve?

One thing I have learned when mentoring those who want success, but are struggling to achieve their desires, is that they rarely understand what the price of success is, and if they are willing to pay it. Everyone wants to make a million dollars, but they want to spend $100 to get there. That is what I call gambling, or the lottery, mentality. The investment on those successes is to invest as little as possible and get returns that are 100 times more than you had to risk. Those things don’t work out. I know that whatever the cost of the reward desired, you better be willing to pay at least double that price tag in effort to achieve it. So you want to make a million playing basketball? You better get used to the idea of spending two million in effort and money to achieve that goal. Want to be a billionaire businessperson? Get your two billion of effort, cash, and learning ready to lay on the line.

Risking it all is great as long as you are realistic in the cost and are willing to pay the price. Every price is different for every person. Learn to calculate the price you will have to pay, and get started on the process. Success isn’t cheap.

Risk it all by working to achieve the lifestyle you desire. There can be a “Catch 22” when talking about lifestyle. Most people see the lifestyle statement as riches and spending money. In reality, it is the way you see your life as the most productive. This can be a difficult change as it requires you to accept a new way of thinking and achieving. I know you have to have a lifestyle that you 100% believe in so our main desires will be achieved, and more things than not will work out for you. If you are struggling with what you want to do, then maybe you can evaluate the lifestyle you desire. I desire a lifestyle that gives me the freedom to help as many teens as possible. Once I discovered this, I knew it was time for me to start my own businesses and start writing books. The classroom life wasn’t going to be the BEST I could do. Taking a step away was scary, but I continue to work so I am achieving my goals, even to this point, where my family is asleep on a Friday night and I am up writing. The key is to take those small extra times and use them wisely. I could be watching something on TV, but I have to question if that would take me to my goal and the answer is no. So, I continue to write, since my goals are based on the lifestyle I am working to achieve.

You have to ask yourself if the actions you are doing are helping or hurting you when it comes to the lifestyle you desire. This doesn’t mean I don’t watch TV at all, but there comes a time where you have to give up the good to get the great.

If you haven’t seen this video clip on YouTube, you are missing a powerful explanation of what it takes to make it. Grit is the part of your work ethic that refuses to give up. Its only purpose is to keep pushing you to higher levels and toward the goal you desire.

You have to have grit when things don’t go your way. The life of the successful isn’t created overnight like the life of a millionaire lottery winner is. You have to deal with the chance of losing it all in order to clear the way for something new to grow. All I know, through seeing with my own eyes, is that success comes to those who are too stubborn to realize when life is trying to keep them down, and they just keep getting up. They are the ones who find a way when someone says there is no way.

Many times, things won’t go your way because of something you did. You made a mistake and now you have to pay for it. I know no one likes paying for their mistakes because it is easier to blame someone else for the shortcomings of who we are. On the road to success, there is only you. You can’t control everything, but you can control if you are going to be responsible or not. Many people aren’t able to achieve success because they refuse to be responsible for what it takes to get there. I am fully aware of these mistakes as a coach. There were many years when the teams I coached enjoyed success, and then there were those two years when nothing I did worked, and I had to understand the players just didn’t want it bad enough. I get that everyone wants to win, but there is a price to pay. If you aren’t willing to pay that price, then you aren’t willing to win. At the end of my successful seasons, I could actually say we were beaten by the better team. Those other years, I wasn’t able to say that. My players just weren’t responsible enough for success.

You are 100% responsible for your actions, even when things don’t go your way. This reminds me of a classroom situation where the failing kid would say, “You must not like us since everyone is failing this class.” I would say, “First of all, not everyone is failing, and what does me liking you have to do with having the right answer on the test, or turning in your homework?” There are more options now for success than ever before, so why then do we not see a skyrocket in success? Success takes grit when the good turns bad and you have to keep pushing forward. As you move down the road to your successes, there will be plenty of people with plenty of reasons not to like you, but what does that have to do with your success? You may use is as a crutch to help explain your shortcomings, but honestly, are they really stopping you from having success?

For Academic Success, Get Over Your Demons

I believe everyone has a story and, if told correctly and with enough emotion, people will forgive you for not being the person you really want to be. You could tell a story so tragic the average person would understand there is no way you could be a success because of your past. You probably have a list of people who will let you off the hook if you had a dream, and didn’t accomplish it. They would give you the standard responses like, “At least you tried”, “Having your own business isn’t for everyone”, “Just get any job”, “Well, your parents did drink heavily”, or “You know, you did have to deal with a lot of verbal abuse.” I am not making light of any negative situation like abuse or addiction, but at some point, you will have to deal with whatever life has dealt you. You will have to face all the thoughts and personal issues that go along with any negative behavior that was, or wasn’t, your fault. These demons are a part of everyone’s lives. In order to have the success you desire, you will have to learn to heal and fight off those negative issues been placed in your life.

If you don’t have any of these things going on, demons can still form in your life. When demons form, they get labeled as drama. Drama is defined as things that take good energy away from people and replace it with thoughts, ideas, and actions of negative energy. Much of social networking these days has a lot of drama. Some days can be filled with positive vibes and posts, but there are days when people just want to vent their frustrations with the world. These posts can be a harmless way for people to vent, but they can take away your positive energy if you read too many. If you are in the position where a lot of drama is coming your way, know that a peaceful life involves the ability to deal properly with these situations. No matter how big the demon, or small the drama, you are going to have to rid your life of both. Either way, you will always have some things to deal with or avoid as you move down the path to your desired success.

Getting over your demons means leaving the past where it is, and learning from it. We all make mistakes. Some are huge and some are small. Some are once, and others are daily. Some mistakes will cause us, and others, a great deal of pain, and others can be forgiven fairly easily. No matter where you are now in your high school career, you have to start putting some of the negatives in life in the past to move forward.

When I was working with a group of students a few years ago, I noticed they would say, very early in the day, it was a bad day. In the life of a teen, I can understand when something deemed negative happens it can seem like the end of the world. However, that is rarely the case. One day, I attacked this thought. I asked them to tell me how many hours are in a day. They said 24. Then I asked how many hours they slept. With various hours, we came up with an average of 6. That is too little for high school kids, but oh well, that’s not the point of the exercise. Then, I asked if they thought sleep was positive or negative? Excluding a bad dream, they all concluded it was positive. Right away, they started to get the idea that the entire day wasn’t bad. From there, I asked how many hours in a day were good. Finally, I asked them to think about how many hours in the day they laughed, watched good TV shows, or hang with friends or loved ones? They started to realize most of their day was spent doing enjoyable things, and they were letting the small, untimely inconveniences disrupt the rest of the day instead of enjoying life.

By giving these students a different perspective on their issues, they started to speak differently.   They would come to the group and identify the problem they were having, not just conceding the day because they had a few minor issues. My group was able to understand the power of words, and began to carefully express their negativity. After a few weeks of their transformation, I was told by one of the students they haven’t had a good two weeks in a row in a long time. They realized it was perspective.
