Verizon Samsung S5 and 128gb Micro SD Card Issues

There is nothing more exciting to a “techie” than to see hardware prices come down so you can take your electronics to an even greater level.  I am one of those techies that loves to use my phone for photography.  I take great care of my phones by purchasing a protective case (the kind that have the cage on the inside with the soft rubber on the outside of the cage) and not using the phone until this protection is delivered.

I expect a phone to meet the specifications of blogs that are 6+ months old.  Well, well, here is my thumbs down to a great phone but a promise not kept by the Samsung S5.  If you have noticed the prices of memory dropped greatly during the holiday season.  You could pick up a 64gb micro card from Best Buy for under $50.  That is a great deal for a store.  However, I am a person that likes to shop online and get a better deal on technology.  After seeing the store prices I checked my online sources and found 128gb micro sd cards in the range of $12 – $99 depending on the level of the card.  There is always buyer beware but my first 128 Screenshot_2015-01-06-09-24-55card was the “HC” level and was only $13.  For that price it was worth the risk, plus it had a 10 day warranty.  I took my chances with my 3 month old Samsung S5.  The “card” worked for about an hour and left my images with a strange symbol.  The “card” would only temp hold the images and would erase them when the phone was turned off and back on.  Once back on the images were gone.  I took the card out of the phone and checked on the computer, no good.  The “card” seemed to be the issue.  I immediately returned it and took a venture to the Verizon Wireless store.

After, clearing my phone they felt it was an issue with the S5.Samsung S5 and 128gb Micro SDXC card  They sent me a “new” (really a referb with the same issues) back to me.  I didn’t know this at the time.  After taking time for my new chip (128gb Micro SD XC) to come in i thought a new phone and newer/faster card was the issue.  After a test run the “new” phone and the new Sandisk 128gb Micro SDXC still delivered the same results.  As you can see there seems to be an issue with writing to the card.  It didn’t matter what card i used at the 128gb level it didn’t write.  The SDXC level card is the exact one that I am currently using in my Samsung Tab 3 but at the 64gb level and that thing zooms and works great.  I believe that this phone isn’t able to truly work at this level since I am on my second Samsung S5.

Sandisk 128gb Micro SDXCI don’t know what the answer is but if you need a certain level of 128 Micro SD card for the Samsung S5 to work I would like the people at the Verizon store or on Verizon tech support to know.  There is another level of micro sd card but i believe it is the phone and not the cards.  Instead of using this 128gb powerhouse I am back to the old card.

So I am currently dissappointed in the Samsung S5 and will Samsund Micro SD 32gbhave to continue to use my 32gb card until this tech issue is solved.

If you have any suggestions or are experiencing the same issues please share your solutions.

Actions taken:

Formatted each SD card (4 times).
Followed Verizon Wireless tech support guidelines and rebooted my old phone.
Updated phone (while talking with tech support)
“New” phone (formatted card after updates)
Used multiple 128gb Micro SD cards (HC, XC)
Performed speed test with the card via Sandisk Memory Zone app. (32gb rated at 36.1mb/sec while the 128 rated at 31.0mb/sec) go figure.

Hopefully there is a resolution out there.

FYI, Hire the Best (and Get Good and Finding the Best)

Hire the Best!

As a person that owns a photography company I have found that I have been living a lie that has taken its toll on my life and probably soon my business. You see, I like to do shit myself. I have this odd fascination with the fallacy that no one can do it better than I can. My actions also help keep this false atmosphere around me and change needs to happen if I am going to reach my goal. So here are my personal dealings.

  1. I can do it all by myself: Well I am over that one, and have been for a while but the theory keeps haunting me because…
  2. I don’t hire the right people. I like to give those that will disappoint me a chance. Why? Because I have this need to do it all and this is the only way I can prove that I can do it all. Feel me?
  3. People must prove themselves, just like I have to. Nothing worse than having a standard then hiring someone that can’t help you achieve it. This is a killer of small business.
  4. But I can will a person into being better: No I can’t and you can’t either. It is a complete waste of energy to fight with working age people over how great they can be it they only… To me I have done this too many times for people that, once fired, didn’t do much more with any other opportunity.

As you can see this blog isn’t really for you because you are doing well with all of this. It is a reminder to me that my company is my opportunity to be great and we will only be great if I know what greatness is when hiring.

What can I do better?

  1. Give opportunity to shine but dump the garbage before it stinks up the whole house.
  2. Let people know of their trial (I have done this before and continue to do so)
  3. Stick with the trial rules.
  4. Train more before giving trial. We have videos now so we are moving in the right direction.
  5. Look for people that raise their own bar.
  6. Let go and realize I can’t do it all.

What are my consequences for not doing this well?

  1. Burnout (Fighting this now)
  2. Financial ruin
  3. Failed business due to #1.
  4. Not helping the people I believe I want to help.
  5. Not letting other grow.
  6. Not letting myself grow.
  7. Loss of all the things I desire to accomplish.

We will see what the coming weeks bring. It should be interesting.

Bots, Ghosts, and Organic Followers on IG

IG, You Know You Love It!

IG, You Know You Love It!

This week I learned how to avoid bots and how to boost organic followers via other accounts. The main way to do this is to see if there is an “igers” account for your area. I live in Tampa Bay so there are “igers_tampa” and “igersstpete” accounts that I will hashtag (not tag) when I post event photogs.

Bots: Fake accounts generated out in cyberspace

Organic Followers: Real followers

Ghost Followers: Real followers but don’t engage, like or post much.

Avoiding Bots:

Stay away from any of the following tags and you will have a better chance of avoid fake accounts and fake likes:

#love #TagsForLikes #TFLers #tweegram #photooftheday #20likes #amazing #smile #follow4follow #like4like #look #instalike #igers #picoftheday #food #instadaily #instafollow #followme #girl #iphoneonly #instagood #bestoftheday #instacool #instago #all_shots #follow #webstagram #colorful #style #swag

If you use these you will attract fake accounts.  You can’t get rid of them all the time but the following measures will help eliminate much of the junk traffic.

ORGANIC FOLLOWERS:

To attract real people(organic) find “igers” that relate to your subject and support an IG account that posts those things. For instance for our high school event posts we now use #stpetersburgfl and #ilovetheburg (which is an account and hashtag) to share our work with local people. Because of these two new hashtags we have a few likes but not as many as if we used #like4like. However the tradeoff is that the people of #stpetersburgfl are seeing what we are doing in the area.

Geotag your posts. Here is the issue of geotagging. It seems as if you have to be in the area to get a proper tag. If not you will have to rename the tag and it will just add the tag to the map of your geographic area. That kinda sucks but IG is more of a realtime application unlike faccebook where it is more archival. I have yet to find a fix for this but I am sure it is out there.

We do our best to geotag our stuff in St. Pete and are close enough to pick up areas where events have taken place however our Orlando events aren’t picking up so we just use a hashtag to describe the event.

Use a hashtag of your location:

SAMPLE: #stpetehigh #greendevils #homecoming2k13 #throwback at #stpetecoliseum. We geotag “St. Pete Coliseum” in our map option and hashtag it in the description. You can then add more info and hashtags if you like.

RESEARCH and MEASUREMENTS:

To improve your account organic reach run your profile through this site to get proper measurements: www.iconosquare.com. This site is free and powerful. It measures your communications and traffic. You can also search hashtags before you use them to see how many media are attached to the hashtag. Anything hashtag over 1200 media pieces I will use.

ENGAGE:

I enjoy using the Samsung tablet because it remembers a flow of key words that I normally use in combination. This is how I engage. I will sit for 30 minutes and just look at pics from the search #prom. Thursday is usually the more popular day for this hashtag to reveal new stuff since kids are “throwing it back.”

When I like something it gets a heart, if I really like it I will use a combination of “Very nice, Love it, Nice, Beautiful, Perfect, Funny group, and so on. Figure out what general combinations you will use to engage. Then if the image really strikes you then add more info. Keep it short.

By now you should have a method and should have at least engaged 50 accounts over the last week. From that you should see a return of 5- 10 followers. That is kind of the ratio that we get.

If you ask to follow you will get less return.

  1. Engaging is the best way to get followers.
  2. Following accounts that you like and hashtagging them when you post is another way. Just make sure the content relates in some way.

Hopefully you have something to sell to the people that will follow you. For our account Firefly Event Photography we decided to focus on hashtagging in such a way that it engages Florida, Tampa Bay, Orlando and Miami. Those are the places we want to connect with our service. When we get likes outside those geographic areas, it does us no good since we can’t service them. The likes are good but we have to look at both sides of our account direction. That is where PromPhotography.com comes into play. That site is dedicated to every prom goer outside of Florida that would like prom photography. We are working our services to travel to other areas of the US and world to capture prom images.

As for my personal Pierce Brunson IG account, I just do what I do on Facebook; make it all about me and what I like. My mind works better if my business is separate or my accounts become junk. I will use Pierce Brunson to display my photography and delete Pierce Brunson Photography. Not worth the extra time.

Use Events: Go and be a part of live events to gain followers. Have a product and sell one to a person? Snap a pic and post it to your account. Tag them, geotag and hashtag the event. To make this faster, prepare a script in your digital notebook area. I have prepared 7 different ones that I use at various times. Copy the script and just paste it into the comment space for better results.

As much as social media reduces direct physical contact, your best people, sales, and loyal followers may come from something that isn’t virtual. That can be your product or meeting you at an event. Take the time to get out and then connect people to more of you online.

Ask any questions you may have. I discover stuff every day and my accounts are looking good.

It does take time to build. Try to post 5 times a day for the next 5 days and see how your account grows.

No agenda for next week but I will have some new discovery for you.

How to Go and Get Success: Questions to Answer

The Go and Get It Lifestyle

The questions are from each chapter of my book called Work Ethic. They are designed to create thought so that you will be able to focus on the desires you see yourself accomplishing in your lifetime. Answer the questions as best as you can and then get to work accomplishing the construction of your personal desires.
  1. What are the things you need to go and get this school year?
  2. List 5 actions preventing you from going and getting what you want.
  3. List 5 important skills you are working to develop while you are in high school. At what level do these skills need to be developed to?
  4. List 5 skills teachers or adults are expecting you to develop while in high school.
  5. Where would you rank your success/ability level with those skills?

Work Ethic: The Right Actions to Create a Successful Lifestyle by Pierce Brunson https://www.createspace.com/4786986

It isn’t what you say, it’s what you do that will create the life you want. The high school years are a great time for students to build valuable and rewarding action characteristics to increase self-esteem and deliver results. While enjoying these years, students should be developing the right mindset to achieve the success they desire in the future. In order for success to happen, for students to have that lifestyle they often speak of wanting, they must become adults with a solid, results-based work ethic. Wasting these four years can’t be a part of the plan. By using their time in high school to build the right actions for a successful lifestyle, students can ensure themselves a bright future, no matter the obstacles they will encounter. Work Ethic is for the high school student expecting to live life successfully, and is willing to do the right growth actions to shape a lifestyle of fulfillment, fun, and results.

Want Success: Go and Get It!

Whether you believe you can or you can’t, it’s true. If you are expecting life to just hand you your heart’s desires, and not have to fight to attain and keep them, you are sadly mistaken. Life will require you to design the best plan you can, then give all you have to attain your desired success. Believe it or not, there was a time where I thought my college degree would blast open doors for me, and my success desires. Wrong! I also thought things like, “If I could only just get this degree” all things would be gravy. Getting a degree is just part of the picture. There are so many elements to success you won’t learn in a traditional high school setting, but no matter what you learn during those times, you must learn to go and get what you want out of life. I am dead serious about that. It is what I taught as a coach, what I teach my kids, and a rule I live by. No one is going to just give you something because you exist. If they do give you something just because you exist, you better be ready for the giver to get a bunch more in return. There are no free rides. If you want more than the average, then you have to go and get it.

The students that go and get it find a way to achieve, no matter the difficulty of teacher, subject, or situation. Know this: There is no magical force that is going to arrive and take you to your desired success. I don’t care what you believe in, or how much luck you have; you will have to find a way to achieve your goals. One of the most puzzling things about life is the way blind faith can stall our desires. A lack of planning followed by inaction can cause us to stop and wait for something special to happen when we could be working toward that special happening. When you stop, you lose momentum, and therefore time, in accomplishing your goals. I have watched as people have used their blind faith in something to get out of doing the hard work to achieve a goal. Your beliefs and faith should set your body into motion toward a goal or desired accomplishment. No matter what you believe, you can’t get miracles in your life if you aren’t actively pursuing your goal. Why do you think we go to school all those years? Why do you think people read hundreds of books on a subject? Why do you think people dedicate their lives to a cause? They do all these things because they know their action, and being in the right place at the right time, is what makes the miracle. You have to set your mind to do the correct things that will bring the success you desire. There are always going to be difficult people entering your life. Hopefully they don’t stay for long, but you need to learn how to navigate your path while dealing with people making the way difficult. I don’t believe you should bow down and not stand up for yourself, but you have to understand there are going to be more difficulties that arrive as you work to expand who you are as a person.

While developing Firefly Event Photography, I met adversity way before I met a payday. I still meet adversity, but now I am so focused (through fighting the previous adversities) I now understand it is just part of the path. When I feel an adversity may be too much, I look at others who have come before me as proof that living my dream, and creating my business of choice, is possible. You have to find a way to achieve in the time you have each and every day. Don’t let minor or major issues stop you from reaching the goal you feel set to accomplish.

Instagram Away: Likes, Follows, and Other Tips

If you are new this is part 2 of my IG experience and I am sharing what I have found out through trial and error, other blogs, and the actions needed according to my marketing plan. This week on Instagram I didn’t spend as much time as before to see if I had any momentum. Come to find out I do have some momentum but fair better if I engage people.

Since last writing I spend very little time liking and following people. Here is what I found:

A follow is weak and a like is better. How? A like (the little red heart) is actual engagement and you will more than likely get a return follow if you have something engaging on your site or your site is based on what you are engaging about.

This week we are about +70 organic followers. This is from just looking at a pic in the #prom search and clicking the like button. Since our site has a call to action, it seems that 25% is our like to follow ratio. In other words as we like a pic in the prom category we are getting people to follow and like our site.

As for the direct message of prom pics, if we ask there is about a 70% chance that a person will send us a pic to have it featured. One day we had 24 out of 35 requests. Busy posting day.

I believe that Instagram has three categories of people:

  1. I just follow my friends
  2. I follow stuff I like
  3. I create stuff people will follow

I haven’t noticed any other categories.

What works on Instagram if you have a business?

  • Anything fashion will attract a ton of followers, just hashtag correctly.
  • MOST things beauty related
  • Most things health related

What businesses suck on Instagram?

  • Selling “wraps”…I have no idea but I guess it is the MLM version of SPANX
  • Selling vitamins
  • Selling any juicing program

Your Instagram has to be alive. Fashion is alive because many of the pics are about going out or being out in the world.

Vitamins and such are stale and stiff. The sites that do the best with those show their workout (my T & A theory) and show much of their life. If you are going to eventually sell something make sure you add life to your site.

PAYING for followers:

Does this work?

Truth be told, yes and no. You can use a site like www.buylikesandfollowers.com to boost your numbers. This is promoted as a marketing strategy and it somewhat works. You may want to boost your followers by 500 just to legitimize you site and work organic from there.

We used this site and it did help us get more people to our site. Something with being over 1000 that makes people take notice and follow.

For $6.99 you can get 500 followers and it is fast.

The no part: Almost all of the likes are very similar in account makeup. I found that over 100 only had 5 images and the images were random at best. This isn’t as bad as using the #like4like and getting “follow bots”, but enough to realize that this process is just paying for random marketing.

Today we will be trying to purchase 100 likes for $2.97 and see how that works. The thought is that it will generate more people to the site to follow and to my other sites. There is a claim that they are from real people, we will see.

GETTING Followers at different times:

One of the best days for us is #TBT when kids are reliving their prom night. Find a day that works for you and hit it hard to get followers.

Use #MCM to post shoes

Use #WCW to post fashionable attractors

By knowing a popular posting hashtag and attach other tags that relate to your subject, you can increase your followers.

YOUR IG Profile Words:

On @promphotography we a call to action to get followers. Consider using a call to action if you want to gain more followers and likes. Our message is

TO BE FEATURED Follow Us DM your fav prom pic. Follow @fireflyeventphotography Visit our blog for prom tips.

Figure out what your call to action is and you will see increased traffic there. The IG is just a start to leading a person to become a customer.

Without any push on our site we are getting 7 visitors a week just from this call to action. That is a lot considering the blog isn’t started and the site isn’t fully functional.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

  • Instagram is great for products
  • Using pay services helps a bit but you still have to work the organic side of IG
  • Change up the times you post to catch different people
  • Use popular posting days #TBT to post
  • Call to action on your profile

Next Time: Following statistics, buying likes results, questions answered.
